ECF Grades ...

13 April 2020

Further to the English Chess Federation's plan to convert the current three-figure grading codes to a four-figure system, a provisional list has been issued showing the new grades which would be applied to all players as converted from their current three-figure numbers.

3 January 2020

Following on from their members' survey regarding the ECF grading system (see below), the governing body of chess in this country have decided to change the current 3-numbered grading system to one containing 4 numbers and that a new list will then be issued every month.

It is proposed to start this when the updated grading list for the current system is due to be issued in July 2020.

However, in order to have a "trial run" before the actual new scheme is officially implemented, the 6-monthy list to be issued towards the end of Janaury 2020 will include both a 3 and a 4 numbered grade for each player although it will only be the former which will be used to calculate a player's grade for the next 6-month period.

For players to be able to calculate their new 4 digit grade they need to use the following calculation ....
(3-digit grade x 7.5) + 700 = New 4-digit grade.

Alternatively, to find what their 3-digit grade would have been when the new scheme begins they need to do the following ...
(New 4-digit grade - 700) '/. 7.5 = 3-digit grade.

29 March 2019

The English Chess Federation recently asked its members whether they might wish for its grading system to change from the current 6-monthly periods to grades being issued every month. 77% of members voted in favour. The matter will now be discussed by the ECF board.
